Time off

I took some time off last weekend and went to see a friend in Florida.

We did some Jiu-Jitsu, ate a lot, drank a lot, and watched some fights. I saw that new pattern from Reinier de Ridder (and lost $10), then came back home to get back to the grind.

The time off was planned, necessary, and I came back feeling pretty good. It was my choice, and even when I doubted doing it, I took it anyway with no regrets.

But, in combat sports, time off is not always selective.

Tom Aspinall didn’t want to be sidelined since July 27, 2024. But to unify the Heavyweight title, he had to wait for Jon Jones to do Jon Jones things. Then, he just got to become the UFC Heavyweight Champ once the UFC decided the world doesn’t revolve around Jon Jones (probably to the surprise of Jon Jones).

I know… I wrote his name a lot. LOL

So, is the time off good or bad?

Aspinall is 32 years old.

He’s in his prime, and he probably would have liked to fight through the time he has been off. But the thing about the prime years is that the body goes through a lot, bringing the end of a fighter's prime closer and closer.

32 is still pretty young, and I think he’s itching to get the ball rolling. So I believe he can beat Cyril Gane this weekend.

As we know, I’ve been wrong before, but you never really know in the fight game.

If you want to see my main card picks, I put them up over on my Substack.

If you need a hard copy of the Fight Night Companion, you can always grab one here for whatever you want to pay.

Also, if the UFC 321 card is too early for you, Speciation Sports has some events airing in the evening. I spoke with Alan Olivas, who faces Justin Scoggins on the Synergy FC 23 card airing on the platform. You can check out my interview with him here.
