Timing and UFC 329

There’s a great quote by Conor McGregor on timing. “Precision beats power, and timing beats speed.” He said that after he beat Jose Aldo at UFC 194 to win and unify the UFC Featherweight title. Timing matters a lot in a lot of things. Almost as much as how you spend the time before and after an endeavor. While training and martial arts can be like riding a bike, that first ride back can be a pain in the ass if you haven't ridden in a while. And, it's been a while for McGregor. Holloway, on the other hand, has not only evolved leaps and bounds since he and McGregor last fought, but he's also cemented himself as one of the top featherweight fighters in UFC history, and has zero ring rust compared to McGregor. Still, fans shouldn't forget what made McGregor great. Fans shouldn't forget that he won the first time they fought in 2013. It was by unanimous decision, if you don't remember, but that's when McGregor was still hungry. McGregor's timing and precision could still be his best tools against Holloway. This week admitted that the trappings of fame and fortune have affected his career in recent years, so he may have more to gain if he can beat Holloway, and he has a chance in the early rounds. But the longer the fight goes, the more the path to victory becomes blessed for the likes of Holloway. McGregor’s power, left hand, and counter-striking remain dangerous, especially early. Holloway’s high-output boxing, pressure, and proven ability to absorb damage and outwork opponents over distance are advantages if the fight extends — and I think it will. If this is a return or the beginning of the end of McGregor’s career, it should be fun to watch; hopefully you’re taking notes. Taking notes on this and other events?
