Scott Coker Never Really Left

I got a cool Scott Coker story. I covered a lot of Bellator MMA events at the Mohegan Sun Arena. One night after it was all over, I went to one of the restaurants in the casino to eat. Coker was there too, with a few of the others, let's call them βsuitsβ that helped him run a fight night. I didnβt bother him; the event was over, I submitted my work for the night, and we were both off the clock. So, I figured Iβd leave him alone; we were both getting a late dinner anyway. This was when Bellator Kickboxing was still around; one of the events was playing after the live Bellator MMA event was over, and it was on one of the TVs in the restaurant. When I finished my meal, Cokerβs party had already finished theirs and left. Coker was still seated at his table, alone, watching the kickboxing event. He was focused, head up, and eyes locked on the screen as if watching his favorite movie. The guy loves martial arts and putting on events. When Bellator went under, Black Belt magazine wrote a great piece on him worth checking out.
Today, Coker announced he's coming back, and he's already got a slew of investors. Although if you're in the San Jose, California area, you'll see that he never really left. He and Gilbert Melendez have been putting on local events with some pretty well-known fighters in the area since Bellator went under. And before you try to blame him for that, remember he was not the owner or founder of Bellator; he was just an employee hired by Paramount/CBS (or whatever they were calling themselves in 2023), and he got shaded like everyone else. But that was then, and this is now. Now, after a very popular card that happened on Netflix, which was compared to the Coker-founded Strikeforce π, now is the time to have some fun.
