After last weekend’s Canelo/Crawford event, I was texting with my old roommate about how we both bet on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and lost. He and I watched a lot of boxing together in the early 2000s when we were roommates in college. I was always into martial arts, so as MMA grew more popular, I focused on that more. But every time there is a big boxing match, we reach out to discuss it. I didn’t track boxing the way I track MMA now. So, I went by the online jibber jabber to make my pick. Plus, I’m Mexican, and we tend to never pick against our guy on these marquee Mexican boxing cards. Terrence Crawford won the way I thought Canelo would win. If I had taken notes and set aside my Mexican camaraderie, I would have picked Crawford. But my pick was Canelo to win by decision, which was +130 at the time we texted each other. Crawford won by decision at +195. 🤦♂️So, my method of victory was right; I just didn’t pick the right guy. My old roommate lost because he played some parlay, and I told him, “Parlays are a suckers bet in combat sports.” Which is true, it’s why when all the sportsbooks advertise bets to make, they push the parlays. The best bet to make is on your favorite fighter and method of victory. That’s a tip I got from Luca Fury, who bets on fights professionally. He gave that tip out for free on Twitter/X years ago, and it has definitely been more profitable for me. Justin Gaethje is a fighter I have watched and taken notes on all the way through his WSOF title run, up until now. I’ve made money betting on him, even when he lost to Charles Oliveira. I saw a bet that he would get a knockdown in under a certain number of rounds, and he did. So, I’m sending this out this weekend for you guys to remember, when you’re going to bet, stay away from the parlays. If a fighter you know well is fighting, check the method of victory odds.
